The new Carbonite 3.6 version brings versioning and private-key encryption.

Starting in June 2008, Carbonite will offer a new version of its internet-based data-backup solution. Carbonite version 3.6 will be distributed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland through Globell. Alongside new features including a file-migration assistant, versioning and backup scheduling, version 3.6 provides expanded file-type support and the option to use a private encryption key. It also includes a clearer installation process, alerts for undefined backup data and a compatibility check with installed security software such as anti-spam and firewall applications. The price for 12 months of unlimited storage remains €49.95.

One of the key innovations is “versioning.” This function enables Carbonite users to restore different versions of the same document. If a document is accidentally overwritten, earlier versions are now also available.

“This feature in particular makes the new version especially interesting for many users,” says Jörg Regier, Product Manager for Carbonite at Globell. “Everyone has accidentally overwritten and then saved a particular file. Normally, the original version would be lost. Carbonite’s versioning feature solves this problem by saving different document versions going back as far as 90 days. The user thereby gains greater flexibility and always has access to the version of a file that is needed.”

Another innovation is the migration assistant, which greatly simplifies copying files from one computer to another PC or notebook. It also supports transferring files created on a Windows XP system to Vista, helping to avoid unnecessary data loss and complicated reformatting procedures.$$$$

It is now also possible to create an extended, precisely defined backup schedule. With the new version, users can expand continuous data protection by defining backup windows or blackout periods. In this way, backing up data with Carbonite can be made more efficient, for example outside working hours by using available capacity.

By introducing a private encryption key, Carbonite further strengthens application security. This feature guarantees the highest degree of data protection. It enables users to employ an encryption key they create themselves instead of the system-generated access code.

In addition to these functions, the new version supports further file formats such as .exe and .dll files that were previously not backed up by the system.

The innovations are rounded out by a clearer installation process that makes setting up the system easier, an alert function for undefined backup data and a compatibility check during installation. This checks whether existing applications such as antivirus software or firewalls could affect the backup and provides guidance on resolving any problems that may arise.

For online backup with Carbonite, users need only a small application that can be quickly downloaded from the Carbonite website. The software has a simple, clear interface. Resource consumption is surprisingly low, and backup runs continuously and automatically in the background without affecting computer performance. Most important, however, is data security: comprehensive two-stage encryption before and during transmission ensures that users’ data is secure and that only their own system, using their personal password, can access it. The combination of robust encryption, transmission over a secure Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connection and encrypted storage on Carbonite servers makes this possible.

The new German version of Carbonite will be available from early June on the website as a 12- and 24-month subscription. Twelve months cost €49.95 and the 24-month subscription costs €89.95, including VAT. Under the subscription, Carbonite automatically ensures, according to the settings in the software, that it is updated shortly after a new version appears.

A 15-day trial download is also available at the same URL. This trial contains all Carbonite functionality and can be used free of charge for the stated period.
