Cisco today introduced new video solutions for the Cisco Digital Media System (DMS). Version 5.0 of Cisco DMS brings enterprise TV, interactive desktop video applications and Cisco Digital Signage together for the first time on a single, highly integrated platform.

Visual content can communicate many messages more concisely, directly and quickly. Business TV delivers strategic messages straight to employees, partners and customers. Rich-media e-learning also makes continuing education more efficient—and more enjoyable for employees. Learning objectives are reached faster while training costs fall significantly. Integrating video content into the network broadens communication options overall.

Video is becoming an important business tool, and the market is ready for it. Since Cisco DMS was introduced a year and a half ago, more than 600 prominent organizations worldwide have adopted the solution, particularly in finance and retail, education, sports and entertainment. The main benefits of DMS are improved collaboration, higher productivity, reduced costs, and closer relationships with markets and customers.

DMS innovations at a glance

Cisco Enterprise TV (ETV) optimizes broadcasts as well as video-on-demand access. Companies can easily establish a digital business video library on their network. Employees use a remote control to navigate Cisco DMS’s intuitive on-screen menus and program guides. The new ETV solution uses the same hardware and management tools as Cisco Digital Signage, saving investment and limiting operating costs. Cisco Desktop Video, meanwhile, is an application that lets users share on-demand video, video portals and webcasts. It also provides additional security features and extensive viewing statistics.

The new Cisco Digital Media Player (DMP) 4400G is suitable for Cisco Digital Signage and every type of screen or content, supporting MPEG-4, H.264, Flash 9, standard definition and high definition.

Video surveillance over the IP network

Also new is a fully integrated video-surveillance solution for Cisco ISR (Integrated Services Router). Traditional analog cameras and wired or wireless IP cameras can connect directly to the network and be controlled and managed centrally or locally, depending on the security concept. This eliminates the need for separate connection infrastructure or an additional management and monitoring solution. Archiving and automated retrieval of stored surveillance images are also handled entirely over the IP network. The new Cisco Video Management and Storage System (VMSS) module for Cisco ISR works seamlessly with Cisco Video Surveillance Operations Manager and Cisco Video Surveillance Media Server. Intelligent image-processing software can, for example, automatically adjust camera zoom and tilt to follow object movement in the monitored area. Cisco’s video-surveillance solution offers advanced security features to improve physical security without the added cost of a dedicated cabling infrastructure. Support for conventional analog cameras also protects existing security investments.
