Apple Reports Record Third-Quarter Results

Apple last night announced results for the third quarter of fiscal 2008, which ended June 28, 2008.

For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $7.46 billion and net profit of $1.07 billion, or $1.19 per share. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported revenue of $5.41 billion and net profit of $818 million, or $0.92 per share. Gross margin was 34.8 percent, compared with 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 42 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple shipped 2,496,000 Macintosh computers during the third quarter of fiscal 2008, representing year-over-year growth of 41 percent in unit sales and 43 percent in revenue. The company sold 11,011,000 iPods during the quarter, an increase of 12 percent in unit sales and seven percent in revenue compared with the third quarter of 2007. Apple sold 717,000 iPhones during the quarter, compared with 270,000 in the year-ago quarter.

“We are proud to report the most successful June quarter for revenue and earnings in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We set a new record for Mac sales, we believe we have a real winner in the iPhone 3G, and we are working at full speed to introduce more wonderful new products in the coming months.”

“We are extremely pleased with our business performance and the increase of nearly $5.4 billion in cash during the first nine months of our fiscal year,” added Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008, we expect revenue of $7.8 billion and earnings of $1.00 per diluted share.”
