First BarCamp Stuttgart: Web 2.0 Community Meets in the State Capital

The first BarCamp Stuttgart will take place on 27 and 28 September 2008 with support from MFG Baden-Württemberg, the state innovation agency for IT and media.

BarCamp is a new, self-organized conference format in which topics from every area of the internet and Web 2.0 are decided spontaneously. Following numerous successful events in Berlin, Cologne, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Munich, the so-called “unconference” will now be held in the Baden-Württemberg state capital for the first time.

Bloggers, marketing experts, entrepreneurs, programmers and everyone interested in the internet will gather at BarCamp Stuttgart to exchange ideas and learn from one another in an open environment. Proposed topics generally range from Web 2.0 in general and within companies, known as Enterprise 2.0, to new online media, e-commerce and open-source technologies. Social networks and the legal and social aspects of Web 2.0 will also be discussed and knowledge shared. Alongside numerous discussions and presentations, the event concept places a strong emphasis on interaction and exchange among participants.

The event is attracting considerable interest. Almost 100 people had registered only ten hours after registration opened on 17 July 2008.

Around 200 participants are expected in total.

“The BarCamp concept corresponds to the idea of the new social web. Just as knowledge in the virtual realm is increasingly created by users themselves—Wikipedia is one example—the conference topics at BarCamps are determined by the participants. Analogous to user-generated content in Web 2.0, BarCamps could therefore also be called user-generated conferences,” says Klaus Haasis, managing director of MFG Baden-Württemberg, which is supporting the first BarCamp Stuttgart as part of its Web 2.0 activities.

The innovation agency for IT and media aims to raise public awareness of the potential of Web 2.0 applications and promote exchange across industry boundaries. As part of its Web 2.0 innovation program, it has therefore initiated numerous stimulus events and working groups. Their findings and projects appear in the current Web 2.0 publication a digital lifestyle.
