The report shows that the Asia-Pacific region is an emerging market for computer games. Against the backdrop of the second Games Convention Asia (GCA), Jörg Zeißig, Managing Director of LMI, and Greg Unsworth, Asia-Pacific Technology Industry Leader at PwC, discussed opportunities for the video-games industry in the Asia-Pacific region with industry representatives. GCA is organized by LMI and will take place from September 18 to 20, 2008, at the Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Center in Singapore. It will be accompanied by the GC Asia Conference (GCAC) developer conference at the same venue from September 18 to 19.

According to PwC’s annual “Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2008–2012,” Asia-Pacific remains the largest video-games market, with revenue of $14.8 billion in 2007—around €9.3 billion. Revenue is expected to rise to $25.3 billion, or €15.9 billion, by 2012. Both the European and Asia-Pacific markets are projected to grow by 11.3 percent, while a lower growth rate of 7.6 percent is expected in the United States.

“Asia-Pacific is currently the largest sales market for the video-games industry,” Unsworth said. “An event such as GCA, which serves as a global platform for the industry, can play an important role in expanding the market. New benchmarks are being set here in the region.”

Zeißig added: “Singapore has the right package to establish itself as an international meeting place for the industry. It is the gateway to the growing computer-games market in Asia-Pacific and represents the entire Asia-Pacific region. The games industry has a strong presence here, and all the major industry players have local offices. Singapore is the link to the video-games industry’s other core markets.”

The theme of this year’s Games Convention Asia is “Inspire Yourself.” GCA is one of the largest events for games and interactive media in the Asia-Pacific region. Following the successful launch the previous year, organizers expected another successful event in 2008.
