GOA, the games division of Orange’s Content Division, and EA studio Mythic Entertainment announced that the open beta for the anticipated MMORPG Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning would begin on September 7, 2008. Hundreds of thousands of fans would gain access to WAR’s uncompromising fantasy world and Realm vs. Realm combat before the game launched on September 18. European players could obtain access by ordering the WAR pre-order box or applying for one of the limited places through the EA Store.

“Three years ago we said ‘WAR is coming,’ and the team has worked hard to keep that promise,” said Mythic co-founder and general manager Mark Jacobs. “In just a few weeks we will throw the doors wide open and give more players than ever access to WAR. The open beta will let them see for themselves that WAR is here and that it is a great game.”

In Europe, GOA offered the beta client with the EA Store, which was distributing 75,000 open-beta keys. During the first week of September, the client could be downloaded on a first-come, first-served basis from http://www.ea-store.co.uk.

European closed-beta participants received automatic access. Fans who had pre-ordered registered at the GOA Account Center at http://www.war-europe.com, created an account and entered their beta code, after which they could download the client from the official European site or EA Store.

Warhammer Online for PC was rated 12 by USK and PEGI. WAR was the first MMORPG scheduled to open servers simultaneously in North America, Europe and Oceania when it launched on September 18, 2008.
