This makes the veteran Berlin club the premiere venue for the world’s first wave-field-based 3D audio installation in the electronic music scene. The new sound technology enables DJs to move spatial sound fields and sound objects freely around the room, giving listeners the feeling of being fully immersed in the music with all their senses.
Wave field synthesis opens completely new dimensions for performers, live acts, electronic artists and DJs in nightlife: sounds, noises, voices and instruments can be moved freely through the room — wave field synthesis effectively lets them “wander across the dance floor”, giving listeners and dancers an entirely new sound experience. The Iosono audio system creates a perfect spatial impression for every listener, regardless of their position in the room. The limited “optimum” area that constrains conventional sound reproduction, such as 5.1 multichannel systems, no longer exists with the new Iosono sound system.
Iosono is the latest technology from Karlheinz Brandenburg, one of the inventors of MP3, and will be installed for four weeks in the battery room of the Tresor Club at Köpenickerstrasse 70 in Berlin-Mitte from the start of the Popkomm trade fair. Throughout October, visitors can hear and test the possibilities the sound system offers clubs, events and musicians: every DJ and live act in Tresor’s battery room will perform exclusively through the Iosono sound system. In preparation for the event, artists including Stewart Walker of Detroit, Fidelity Kastrow of London and Heiko Laux of Berlin have already familiarised themselves with the system’s special capabilities in order to provide audiences with the best possible listening experience.
Wave field synthesis is based on a discovery made by Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens around 1870. He found that wavefronts can be created by a large number of individual point sources. Iosono uses this remarkable effect with a surrounding array of 200 independent audio channels and more than 600 individual loudspeakers.
The Iosono installation at Berlin’s Tresor Club is the world’s first dance-floor installation of such a sound system. Other Iosono systems have already been installed at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion in Orlando and Bavaria Filmstadt in Munich, among other venues.
Workshops and Opening, 8–10 October 2008:
