At the Filmmaker’s Festival opening gala, Clint Eastwood, Wolfgang Petersen and Steven Soderbergh congratulated Academy Award-winning editor Anne V. Coates by video message from Hollywood on receiving the Festival Honors in Frankfurt.
Silke Lautenschläger, Hesse’s Minister for Science and Art and patron of the festival, presented the award. Coates said she valued it because it was an honour from filmmakers for filmmakers and expressed the appreciation of colleagues. She won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for Lawrence of Arabia in 1963 and continued to edit major Hollywood productions.
The festival also presented the IMAGO Tribute, the European Federation of Cinematographers’ honorary award, for the first time. It went to Federico Fellini’s legendary cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno.
The gala’s artistic highlight was a live performance created by Barbara Buchholz and pedda Borowski. Buchholz generated electronic sounds by moving her hands through the electromagnetic field of a theremin, while Borowski accompanied her with a painted light performance projected onto a screen. Around 700 invited guests attended at CineStar Metropolis. Theremins had previously featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.”
Festival director Sebastian Popp described the selection criteria as “no mainstream, top artists and a connection to film.” The gala opened the second decade of the eDIT Filmmaker’s Festival, a German festival dedicated to creative film and media professionals from around the world. The 11th festival was organized by Hesse’s Ministry for Science and Art and the Hessian authority for private broadcasting and new media, with support from the City of Frankfurt, Frankfurt Economic Development and Saalbau.
