Short Film Conference Held as Part of the German Short Film Award 2008

Two Cologne events in mid-November will explore “Short Film—New Forms, New Forums—Offline, Online,” with experts from film production, editorial departments and criticism taking part.

To mark the presentation of the German Short Film Award and Short Tiger 2008, a conference in Cologne will examine established and emerging digital options for presenting and distributing short films. The event on 17 November is divided into Online and Offline sections, each discussed for half a day.

The Offline section, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, Filzengraben, 50676 Cologne, covers the presentation and distribution channels of television, cinema, museums and festivals. It examines various offline presentation models, from efforts to bring short films back to cinemas and the presentation of short cinematic forms in an art context to insights into the work of 3sat’s editorial team through several special short-film projects. Panellists and speakers include Alexandra Gramatke of KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg, film critic Daniel Kothenschulte and Ingrid Gränz of 3sat’s film editorial team. Professor Matthias Müller and Professor Thomas Bauermeister will moderate.

The Online section, from 2 to 5 p.m. at ifs internationale filmschule köln gmbh, Werderstrasse 1, 50672 Cologne, examines digitally networked presentation and distribution options and analyses their influence on short-film forms and content. Experts will describe rapid developments and future trends, representatives of new online portals will present their projects and business models, and young short-film makers will report on their online experiences. Participants include Reinhard W. Wolf, publisher of the online magazine http://www.shortfilm.de, among other roles; Scott Kirsner, author of The Future of Web Video and blogger at Cinematech.com, appearing by video interview; Alexander Gorny of hobnox.com; C. Cay Wesnigk of onlinefilm.org; Alec Crichton of Souvenirs from Earth; producer Moritz Grenzebach; and director Christopher Becker. Professor Dr Gundolf S. Freyermuth will moderate.

Attendance is free but registration at kb@108projects.com is required. The organisers are providing a shuttle service to connect the two sections of the event.
