3G technology and the second-hand handset market are just two of the topics Qualcomm will discuss in the “Moving Images on Mini Displays” panel at M-Days, the Mobile Ad and Content Days, on January 22 and 23, 2009 at BMW Welt in Munich.
The global economic crisis has made many forecasts for the coming months relatively negative. But the picture is not gloomy everywhere. Siegmund M. Redl, Senior Director and head of Qualcomm Europe in Germany, sees a trend that has reached the mass market: mobile internet access. “The iPhone and the Google phone are clearly drivers of this development and of another major trend—the touchscreen. I also see location-based services and mobile social networking, GPS navigation, high-quality cameras, and open operating systems such as Android clearly gaining ground.”
Until recently, only visually simplified short films with straightforward plots worked convincingly on small displays, but sales-promoting mobile videos are also becoming more important. Mobile shopping assistance online or in stores at the click of a handset, and distraction from everyday stress on the underground with a favourite series in miniature format, promise additional revenue through mobile product videos, sales shows and new strategic approaches based on mobile TV technology.
During the “Moving Images on Mini Displays” panel at M-Days, Qualcomm’s Director of Business Development Bernhard von Canstein will explain his view of mobile TV: “The previous failed attempts in Germany have demonstrated how demanding it is to enthuse customers about a mobile TV solution. In the United States, we are already one step further. Verizon and AT&T are two strong marketing partners there for the MediaFLO-based service, and together with the many broadcasters already transmitting via MediaFLO, we are looking forward to nationwide frequency availability in the US in 2009. We also look to Germany’s future with confidence.”
Alongside Qualcomm Inc., companies including Google, TOMORROW FOCUS, n-tv, Coca-Cola, adidas, T-Mobile, Mediaplus, Sevenone Intermedia and Weischer Mediengruppe will speak at M-Days. With more than 60 speakers and 40 exhibitors, the fourth M-Days launches on January 22 and 23, 2009 under the motto “The Mobile Phone as Multiplier”, offering innovative insights into the digital world for the advertising, media and consumer-goods industries.
