Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 received the highest rating in a test by the renowned Austrian testing laboratory AV-Comparatives. Using its proactive technologies to detect malicious programs, the antivirus solution from international IT security specialist Kaspersky Lab achieved the best result in AV-Comparatives’ history. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 outperformed 14 of the 15 competing solutions in detecting malicious programs. Independent tests such as those conducted by AV-Comparatives therefore demonstrate the increasing effectiveness of proactive technologies in Kaspersky Lab security solutions.

“The results of this test show that even without current signatures, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 is capable of detecting and blocking at least 60 percent of all malicious programs—even when the user disables most of the protection features,” says Nikolay Grebennikov, Vice President Research and Development at Kaspersky Lab. “It should also be noted that AV-Comparatives did not test the latest protection component—a special module for checking email attachments. This makes it possible to decisively increase the level of detection for unknown malicious programs,” Grebennikov continues. Under real-world conditions, he says, the computer’s level of protection is significantly higher and provides virtually 100-percent protection against modern information threats.

In AV-Comparatives’ malware-detection test using heuristic technology, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 detected 71 percent of more than 11,000 new malicious programs in the first week of testing. The security solution also achieved a virus-detection rate of 60 percent over the complete four-week test. The laboratory used a total of around 46,000 malicious programs in its endurance test.

“Rapid response to the emergence of new threats and a high level of signature-based virus detection have always been Kaspersky Lab’s strengths. Over the past year, we have perfected heuristic and behavior-based malware detection. This has enabled Kaspersky Lab to make a fantastic leap forward in the fight against new threats,” explains Grebennikov.

Retrospective tests are regularly conducted by antivirus-software experts such as AV-Comparatives. The effectiveness of each method is tested against malicious code that appears over the course of a month. Signature databases updated at the beginning of the month are used, meaning the code is unknown to the respective security solution.
