During their studies, media design students at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences are given many conceptual and creative assignments. Seminars in visual fields such as photography, typography, film and animation, or 3D design produce a wide variety of interesting work—new, creative, beautiful and cheeky pieces, and sometimes work that shocks or prompts reflection.
“Unfortunately, much of it disappears into a drawer, even though it would offer a perfect insight into the degree program—especially for those interested in studying media design with us. It also demonstrates the tremendous capabilities of our students, from the initial idea to the professional product,” said program director Heidi Weber.
Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences is therefore inviting visitors to look behind the scenes of its bachelor’s and master’s programs at “Blickfang,” the semester exhibition. Work and projects by students from every semester and a wide range of fields will be exhibited. These include one-minute debut videos on the subject of “pairs of opposites,” a poster series about the effect and use of the well-known Helvetica typeface, numerous 3D animations, and an exhibition of communication concepts for companies in future markets from the InterMedia master’s program.
“Blickfang is also interesting for the advertising industry and our external lecturers, because the exhibition provides a good overview of the current standard of student work. Within the university, Blickfang is a useful platform for learning what is happening in other semesters. We therefore expect a strong turnout,” Weber explained. In short, Blickfang is the ideal meeting place for anyone interested in contemporary design.
Alongside the student work, Blickfang will also present material from the “Illustre Runde” symposium, held at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in November 2008 on the subject of illustration. Blickfang will show results from the workshops “Illustrating Portraits—even for Non-Drafters” and “Moving Graphics—from Point, Line and Surface to Space and Animation.”
The Blickfang semester exhibition will be opened by the program director on Friday, 23 January, at 2 p.m. in the university library in the Achstraße building. The young media designers will then personally present their work and projects. A coffee bar in the foyer will provide an ideal place to exchange ideas and information with students, graduates, lecturers and media professionals.
