With only 140 characters, microblogging offers fast and simple communication online. From mundane subjects and relevant content to targeted information, microbloggers document their lives online around the clock. Europe’s first Microblogging Conference (MBC 09) will take place in Hamburg on 23 and 24 January 2009. Participants will have plenty to discuss about popular tools such as Twitter and identi.ca, which are used not only by geeks and early adopters to document current events online.
The two-day conference in the atrium of the Hamburg State and University Library will bring together experts in communications and Web 2.0. Interested users will exchange views with international guests on the trend topic of microblogging and discuss future developments. Subjects at the predominantly English-language conference include:
- The future of microblogging
- Twitter in journalism
- 140 characters for public relations
- Professionalizing microblogging
- Technology and development, APIs and mashups
- Lifestreaming as a profiling method
- Legal frameworks
MBC 09 is characterized by active contributions from all participants in discussions, lectures and presentations. Every visitor is expected to contribute topics and material to the conference program. The primary aim of both practical and theoretical workshops is a lively exchange of knowledge and first-hand learning. Shortly after the event begins, all participants will vote on the agenda and determine the conference’s subsequent course.
The microblogging community is meeting at its own conference in Europe for the first time. sevenload is supporting MBC 09 as its official sponsor. In response to high visitor demand, initiator and organizer Cem Basman is already planning a follow-up event. The “MBC09 Summer Camp” is scheduled to take place in Cologne in September 2009. Further information on MBC 09 is available from the official website at http://www.mbc09.de.
