Qualcomm and Abertis Telecom presented mobile television based on MediaFLO at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 16 to 19 February 2009. In a first, the MediaFLO network was transmitted both at the trade fair and across the city of Barcelona. The citywide mobile broadcast demonstration was designed to show exhibitors and potential partners the quality and coverage of Mobile TV on MediaFLO.

The MediaFLO demonstration offers more than 30 channels, including Spanish channels as well as international channels such as France 24 and ProSieben. IP-based datacasting, clipcasting, and interactive services are included, enabling voting, chat, social networking, and mobile commerce alongside TV viewing. The service is available on receivers already on the market, as well as on dedicated mobile TV receivers and special Wi-Fi add-on devices. Three transmitters in Barcelona support the citywide MediaFLO network, which operates on 8 MHz in UHF channel 56 (754 MHz).

“The citywide demonstration shows the innovative services of MediaFLO technology and the advantages of the new devices. We also believe in the global growth potential of up to 10 billion dollars over the next five years,” said Neville Meijers, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm MediaFLO Technologies. “Beyond expanded channel capacity, the MediaFLO platform supports interactive transmission of TV content and additional features, helping mobile TV providers optimize revenue opportunities.”

The platform is aimed at delivering high-quality entertainment and information, including video and audio streaming, clipcasting, and IP datacasting, together with interactive services. Additional information on MediaFLO is available at http://www.mediaflo.com.
