At the beginning of the 1980s, computers were generally the size of cabinets, usually stood in data-processing centers and had to be fed by experts. While computers with 10 MB of storage were then considered the ultimate, any USB stick today offers one hundred times the capacity. Twenty-five years ago—in 1984—change arrived: the Mac revolutionized the computer world, commercial television conquered Germany’s media landscape, and much more. Addison-Wesley belongs to a generation that experienced its world transformed by the introduction of a new technology: the personal computer.

Addison-Wesley participated in the arrival of IT in everyday life and, in a sense, made hardware, software and related topics understandable to a generation. As a guarantor of valuable knowledge transfer, the publisher produces books meeting the highest standards under the motto “The Sign of Excellence.” “Anyone who cannot offer something special will ultimately have to disappear,” publishing director Axel Nehen summarized. “Specialist knowledge alone is not enough to make a technical book successful—just as a fashionable sweater does more than simply keep you warm. Assuming they are current and accurate, computer books must engage with the lives of the people for whom they are intended. In this respect, they are fundamentally no different from any other consumer product. Because the spectrum of technology enthusiasts is so broad, it is particularly helpful to differentiate the offering through different products—from books and video training to e-books on CD or DVD. Addison-Wesley is a publisher that does exactly that.”

Publishing History

Addison-Wesley has operated in Germany for 25 years. The publisher, whose emblem consists of “three red diamonds,” is one of the most experienced and respected computer-book publishers in the German-speaking market. Based first in Bonn and later in the IT hub of Munich, Addison-Wesley works closely with leading companies in the IT industry, including Adobe, IBM, Microsoft and Apple.

Since 1999, Addison-Wesley Germany has belonged to educational publisher Pearson Education and, as its German branch, embodies the parent company’s ambitious publishing policy. The most important works by American authors continue to appear in German, including those by innovators such as Bjarne Stroustrup, inventor of C++; James Gosling, who developed Java; Photoshop expert Scott Kelby; and many others.

A Quarter-Century Later

In addition to books, the publisher offers leading German-language video training on DVD in cooperation with Video2Brain. More recently, computer-based training courses on programming topics and e-books on CD and DVD have rounded out the range.

With around 120 new publications annually, Addison-Wesley accompanies all major developments in the highly dynamic IT industry. Whatever the subject, the publisher’s hallmark and programmatic commitment remains “THE SIGN OF EXCELLENCE.”

Many new Addison-Wesley titles will reach the market in the publisher’s 25th year, including a limited anniversary edition.
