Training Trends 2009: Multimedia Careers Grow

SAE Institute reports increased interest in training for audio, film, web and games.

More young people are seeking training that prepares them practically for emerging careers. SAE Institute says current inquiry and registration figures for its German courses demonstrate the trend: despite difficult economic conditions, the education provider reports 15 percent more registrations than in the previous year for course sections beginning in September. SAE interprets this as a move away from traditional career choices toward modern, growth-oriented fields in audio, digital film and animation, web design and development, and game design.

A wider range of career options

Audio, film and web professions have long moved beyond their early purely creative niche and become established in industry and commerce. Car manufacturers employ sound designers to develop door and engine sounds for new vehicles, while web designers have become essential specialists in large marketing departments. Career goals such as audio engineer, sound designer, 3D designer, web developer and programmer therefore rank highly. SAE offers courses and qualifications across these areas.

Multimedia is not only for men

More than 20,000 students attend SAE Institutes worldwide, including over 4,000 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. SAE says the gender ratio is notable: multimedia is one of the few technical career sectors in which the proportion of women approaches that of men. Audio remains the clearest male-dominated area, while women account for approximately 40 percent of web design, web development and game design students and around 50 percent of film students, with the figures rising.

The SAE diploma

SAE’s practice-oriented courses train students as generalists with current technical knowledge and independently developed expertise. The institute says its qualifications have become a widely recognized benchmark for cross-disciplinary specialist knowledge in the media industry.

Götz Hannemann, head of marketing at SAE Germany, regards the rising inquiry figures as confirmation of the concept. “Particularly in difficult economic times, training paths that offer the best prospects for future careers are in demand. In the past, parents mainly considered later career opportunities when choosing education for their children. Increasingly, young people themselves are now making long-term, goal-oriented decisions.”

Clear courses and clear goals

SAE courses prepare students for specific tasks in their future professions while providing broad knowledge within each field.

The Audio Engineer Program prepares students for careers in professional audio and trains generalists for music, radio, film and television, theater, musical productions and games.

The Digital Film & Animation Program targets the requirements of the film and digital content creation industries while also preparing graduates for areas such as electronic broadcasting.

The Web Design and Development program develops creative and technical skills and provides the professional knowledge needed to deliver projects for advertising and digital content creation.
