4th Virtual Fires Congress

The April 8–9 congress focuses on simulation and virtual reality for a European firefighting and disaster-control center.

Under the theme “Serious Gaming in Firefighting and Disaster Control,” the event examines the opportunities that simulation and virtual reality provide for the development and use of serious games. These systems are already used to train emergency and rescue personnel for real incidents as safely and realistically as possible. Interactive workshops on the second day invite participants to contribute directly.

International simulation and visualization specialists including Professor Ed Galea of the University of Greenwich and Professor Dr. Dr. Jivka Ovtcharova of LESC at the University of Karlsruhe will once again provide an extensive program of presentations. The outlook for future education and training also includes practical experience: fire-service representatives and suppliers of serious-gaming solutions will discuss their use of innovative concepts and share that experience directly with attendees in interactive workshops on the second day.

The event also offers several technical highlights. Carl Zeiss AG of Oberkochen, the principal sponsor, will demonstrate a low-cost complete VR solution combining its CINEMIZER video glasses with VISENSO’s COVISE virtual-reality software. The setup is intended to make training with innovative simulation technology accessible to volunteer fire departments.

A six-meter-wide screen with HD projection will also be shown in St. Georgen for the first time. Following a successful event last spring with around 60 participants from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the congress is now opening to attendees from the rest of Europe and overseas. The aim is to combine and share expertise worldwide and initiate joint research projects. Simultaneous interpretation will make the complete program available in English.

Once again, the activities are being held under the patronage of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs. This underlines the importance of innovative simulation and visualization approaches to firefighting and disaster control, particularly for education and training.

The event is aimed at fire-service and rescue representatives from training and operational practice, representatives of public bodies and institutions involved in fire and disaster control, transport and environmental specialists, researchers and educators, and providers of simulation, visualization and serious-gaming solutions. An accompanying trade exhibition will survey currently available innovative technology for fire and disaster control and encourage the exchange of practical experience.
