LifeSize Communications introduced Express 200 as an HD videocommunication system supporting dual-display video and content at under €6,000. The company positioned it as a way to make videocommunication easier to use and affordable for organizations of different sizes.
Express 200 supported HD video across two displays and full-screen HD content. The version with a fixed Focus camera targeted offices, while a movable PTZ camera model targeted conference rooms.
The system supported multi-user applications. Doctors could speak with patients or colleagues while sharing high-resolution medical images; video reporters or game developers could edit high-resolution content together in real time; and companies could connect offices, remote workers and headquarters.
Analyst Andrew Davis of Wainhouse Research said the system responded to demand for affordable HD video and could encourage wider deployment. LifeSize founder and CEO Craig Malloy said it extended the price-performance approach introduced by the original LifeSize Express in 2007.
High-definition communication anywhere
Express 200 transmitted 720p video at 30 fps and received 720p at 60 fps. Data and content could be shared in real time at 1280×768. It handled HD video content at bandwidths up to 1 Mbit/s and supported 50 resolution variants for interoperability across different network rates. LifeSize said all product features were included without hidden costs.

Expanded LifeSize software
LifeSize also announced software release 4.1 with:
• 720p60 decoding for LifeSize Team 200 and Express 200, allowing reception at 1280×720 and 60 fps with improved video and motion handling
• Four-way calls with presentation support in LifeSize Room and LifeSize Team MP, adding screen-layout options for multipoint calls
• SIP-call improvements including dual video, SDES key exchange for secured calls and stronger Microsoft OCS presence integration
• Expanded administrator control, including Local Directory Management for telephone-book settings and access permissions
Price and availability
LifeSize Express 200 shipped immediately in two versions: the fixed Focus camera and integrated microphone model at €5,599, and the PTZ camera with external microphone at €6,479.
LifeSize Software 4.1 was scheduled for download at the end of April for customers with current maintenance contracts.
