“We Are the People – Love Knows No Borders” won twice at the 2009 Bavarian Television Awards. The Sat.1 commission produced by Olga Film, a Constantin Film affiliate, received awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actress in a Television Film. Actress Anja Kling and screenwriter Silke Zertz each accepted a Blue Panther at the ceremony in Munich’s Prinzregententheater.
The elaborately produced two-part event drama told of the final months of East Germany, true friendship, courageous opposition figures and the constant fear created by informants and collaborators. Alongside Anja Kling, the main cast included Hans Werner Meyer, Felicitas Woll, Heiner Lauterbach, Matthias Koeberlin, Anna Fischer and Jörg Schüttauf. Thomas Berger directed; Viola Jäger, Molly von Fürstenberg and Harry Kügler produced.
When broadcast in October 2008, the two parts averaged a 16.7% share in the advertising-relevant demographic. At the final episode’s peak, as many as five million viewers watched the emotional conclusion.
