Exceptionally talented and committed school graduates and first-year students could apply to the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences for Media and Communication (MHMK) for an excellence scholarship. Introduced in May, the programme was intended to help talented applicants finance their studies. Each of the five campuses in Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin and Hamburg awarded one full scholarship covering tuition fees for the duration of the degree. The total funding exceeded €100,000. An internal scholarship committee decided admission to the programme.
The excellence scholarship was first awarded for the 2009/10 winter semester and was subsequently to be offered every semester. Candidates needed excellent final grades and convincing evidence of practical qualifications. Requirements included an Abitur grade of at least 1.5 or an equivalent university-entrance qualification, evidence of voluntary social engagement and, depending on the intended degree programme, artistic or creative work. Scholarship recipients were also expected to organise community-building events for fellow students and take on representative roles such as student representation.
“Our aim is to qualify students not only professionally but also in terms of their personal development,” said Professor Jürgen Faust, Dean of MHMK’s Faculty of Media, explaining the selection criteria and obligations. “The media and communications industry is fast-moving and diverse. To succeed, our graduates must be team players, flexible and responsible. We teach this during their studies. The scholarships also provide a concrete incentive to acquire these interdisciplinary skills independently.”
