The VDW AWARD 09 competition is open. Until August 7, everyone involved in producing an advertising film is invited to submit it for the renowned award. Held under the theme “Board of Ideas,” VDW AWARD 09 introduces several changes. Films from the entire German-speaking region can be submitted for the first time. Three categories join the previous fifteen to reflect the growing relevance of the internet to advertising-film production: Viral Films; Crossmedia & Best Use of Media; and Visual Media, Microsite & Guerrilla. Spots can again be submitted online at http://www.vdw-award.de.
The winners will be announced and the eighteen prizes—called Hattos after VDW AWARD inventor Hatto Kurtenbach—presented at Oper Frankfurt on October 23. Like the association, which opened to post-production companies last year, VDW AWARD 09 is conceptually expanding. “German, Austrian and Swiss agencies and production companies are partners in the same market and have always maintained close exchange, so the geographic opening is only logical,” says VDW Managing Director Torsten Levermann. The new categories also recognise the development of internet productions: “Quality in this area has advanced considerably. Some online spots can now compete with classic television or cinema advertising, so we have decided to recognise these productions at VDW AWARD.”
Despite the changes, the award’s fundamental ambition remains unchanged. “VDW AWARD 09 honours both the creative performance and organisational production achievement of exceptional advertising films, with the particular aim of bringing participants to the foreground,” says VDW board member Florian Sigl. The best individual creative work in Direction, Script, Cinematography, Editing, Visual Effects, Animation, Makeup, Styling, Art Direction/Set Design, Sound Design, Cast and Music will receive Hattos on October 23. The best national, international and student advertising films and outstanding productions in the three new categories will also be honoured.
