According to the companies, Ableton’s “Ableton Live” software becomes even more powerful– with “Launchpad,” jointly designed by Novation and Ableton, which communicates bidirectionally with “Ableton Live” and allows interaction with the software. The 8×8 matrix with backlit buttons provides direct access to many functions, and the mode selectors guide users through the Live interface.
Users can thus easily switch between starting a song, fine-tuning mixer settings and, for example, accessing a synth or drum machine, Novation promises. Each clip reportedly has its own button with multicolored, variable-brightness backlighting to indicate its status: amber signals that the clip is loaded, green means it is playing, and red indicates recording. Certain buttons also provide shortcuts to the various areas of Ableton’s control window, including the Session View, mixer and instrument racks. The Session Overview also makes it easier to navigate large configurations.
In addition, “Launchpad” is said to be suitable as a controller for Ableton’s “Max for Live” software extension, and it also works smoothly as part of a team. Up to six “Launchpads” can interact within one system. And when used with other MIDI controllers, such as Novation’s SL MKII series, “Launchpad” provides additional functionality: a Zero SL MKII can be used for mix control, for example, while “Launchpad” triggers clips. And of course, although “Launchpad” was designed specifically for “Ableton Live,” it also works with any other DAW software. Novation’s unique Automap controller software makes this possible.
Thanks to bus power, “Launchpad” is also ideally equipped for mobile use, according to Novation. The rubber feet ensure a secure position, and an optional padded neoprene sleeve is available for optimum protection while traveling.
Alongside the USB cable, Novation’s latest controller reportedly comes with a DVD-ROM containing a special “Launchpad Version” of “Ableton Live 8.” This means users can start making music immediately, especially since 1 GB of samples from “Loopmasters” and “Mike The Drummer” provide ample choice for creative experiments.
Novation “Launchpad” will be available from November 1, 2009, at a recommended retail price of 199,- euros.
