The Rugged eSATA offers greater storage capacity and a cost advantage over other eSATA SSD solutions, the company explains. In addition, LaCie’s new product is said to be the only mobile eSATA solution powered via the USB bus.
Thanks to its eSATA interface, the LaCie Rugged eSATA combines higher transfer rates - up to 90 MB/s - with a mobile design. The combined USB-eSATA interface, also known as Power eSATA, has a different connector from eSATA and is usually found on the latest notebook models, the company adds. The hard drive is also compatible with standard eSATA connections. According to LaCie, only the supplied USB power cable also needs to be connected.
“We are delighted to integrate Power eSATA technology into our best-selling ‘Rugged’ hard drive,” said Anne-Sophie Marchand, Manager of Consumer Products. “This solution offers customers who travel frequently fast transfer rates while also ensuring compatibility with standard eSATA and USB 2.0 connections.”
According to the company, the unusual, scratch-resistant aluminium housing with shock-resistant rubber protection makes the LaCie Rugged eSATA particularly durable. The data stored on the mobile hard drive is therefore especially well protected. The award-winning product design of the “Rugged” aluminium housing was created by world-renowned designer Neil Poulton.
