Sky Germany is showing an HDTV production in 3D for the first time in Germany. On March 14, 2010, the top Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburger SV will be produced in 3D by DFL and Sportcast and shown by Sky Germany to a selected audience in Munich.
“HDTV undoubtedly offers television viewers the most exciting television experience. Sky shows by far the most genuine HD content and is therefore the leader in Germany and Austria. With the first live HD 3D production in Germany, we are now taking the next step,” explains Brian Sullivan, Deputy CEO of Sky Germany: “As the television innovation leader in Germany and Austria, we are proud to show Germany’s first live HD 3D production. This gives an initial early glimpse of how the already fantastic HD experience will develop further in future.”
Although HD 3D is still in the future, when 3D television arrives, Sky HD customers are already prepared, according to the pay-TV broadcaster: future HD 3D services can be received without difficulty using current Sky HD receivers, the company explains.
Sky is showing Germany’s first live HD 3D production to an exclusive audience in Munich, including Franz Beckenbauer – although the pay-TV broadcaster remains silent about where the demonstration will take place. In parallel with the HDTV production using multiple cameras, Sky also intends to produce in 3D and employ a separate director (Volker Weicker), presenter (Jessica Kastrop) and commentator (Kai Dittmann). Following the world’s first commercial live HDTV broadcast in MPEG4/H.264 on December 3, 2005, Sky Germany is once again making television history with the German premiere of a live HD 3D production, the company advertises.
