Adobe Systems has presented a new Digital Viewer technology that allows print publishers to create appealing digital versions of their magazines. The publishing software was developed together with Condé Nast’s WIRED Magazine, which was recently published for the first time as a digital edition for the Apple iPad. The reader application for WIRED’s June issue, available through the Apple iTunes App Store, was created using Adobe’s Digital Viewer technology.
“The collaboration between Adobe and WIRED has produced a format for digital magazines that enables novel publications to stand apart from the broad mass of digital media,” says David Burkett, Vice President and General Manager Creative Solutions at Adobe. “We intend to make our Digital Viewer software available to all providers soon and plan to release versions that run on multiple hardware platforms. Those already working with InDesign CS5 will be able to produce digital versions of their publications very easily.”
With appealing interactive functions, WIRED Reader impressively demonstrates the possibilities of Adobe’s new Digital Viewer technology. Readers can view video content, slideshows and 360-degree images, and rotate content both vertically and horizontally. Designed by the print-edition team, WIRED Reader goes far beyond the printed version, takes advantage of the tablet format and gives readers the opportunity to explore magazine content with finger movements. This also includes a reduced page view in which the magazine’s content can be seen at a glance. Readers thereby benefit both from faithful reproduction of the print edition’s design and from the dynamic and interactive elements of digital media.
The viewer technology also holds out a new advertising promise. With WIRED Reader, major companies are already using the new interactive functions to implement successful brand campaigns. These advertisements encourage readers to interact with the respective brand, are closely connected with the content and therefore reach readers while they use the magazine. With the help of this new digital magazine, publishers have the opportunity to expand their media repertoire. They reach readers in a new way, can increase their reach and generate additional revenue with their digital offerings.
“Through our partnership with Adobe, we were able to transform a printed issue into a great digital magazine experience for the iPad,” says Thomas J. Wallace, Editor-in-Chief of Condé Nast. “WIRED’s visionary implementation of Adobe technology expands the potential of this new medium for all Condé Nast magazines. Our work with Adobe is only just beginning. We expect to use this technology to publish more of our publications in digital form in the coming months.”
WIRED Reader was created with Adobe InDesign CS5 and other Adobe publishing technologies and impressively demonstrates how Adobe enables magazine editors and other publishers to design compelling content for tablets, smartphones and other devices. The company plans to release software in Adobe Labs soon that will help publishers convert layouts created with InDesign CS5 into appealing applications such as WIRED Reader. Thanks to the close integration of this digital-magazine solution with Adobe Creative Suite 5 products, publishers can expect to leverage investments in existing workflows and their designers’ existing knowledge.
