The latest feat is the adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winning children’s book “The Gruffalo”. The children’s book tells the story of a mouse that keeps hungry forest inhabitants at bay with tales of an imaginary monster, the Gruffalo. But one day the imaginary creature stands before it in the flesh … Unfortunately, we will not learn until October 28 at the animago AWARD & CONFERENCE whether the monster conceived by a mouse will also receive an award this year. You can hear director Jakob Schuh explain how the film was made in a presentation at the forthcoming FMX.
At the end of June, Studio Soi also took The Gruffalo to the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and won second place in the “Audience Favorite Animation Short” category. Congratulations!
With “The Gruffalo”, Studio Soi and Magic Light Pictures ventured to adapt one of Europe’s most successful children’s books of the past ten years. Directed by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang, an impressive mixed technique of photographed miniature sets and CG animation produced a half-hour Christmas special that attracted 9.8 million viewers on the BBC last Christmas and was nominated for the British Academy Award at the beginning of the year. Robbie Coltrane (“Hagrid” in the Harry Potter films) lends his voice to the title monster in the original version. Other roles were played by Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson and John Hurt, among others. The German version is expected to be shown on ZDF this Christmas.
