Kinect and Move are the only hardware highlights at Gamescom so far – and they are getting gamers moving.

The image of gamers as overweight and sluggish could soon change: both Microsoft and Sony are getting serious about motion control. Kinect and Move are being presented at Gamescom.

Sony’s “Move” works using a light on the controller that is tracked precisely by a camera. Kinect, the more exciting technology in our opinion, uses two cameras instead of a light, allowing the player to control games completely freely in the room. Even if the selection of games is still fairly limited, the potential – especially with a giant corporation behind it – is almost impossible to assess.

Particularly interesting is its compatibility not only with the Xbox but also with Windows. Controlling 3D content – for example animation, scenes and modelling without a mouse, but with the hands – is therefore only a few steps away.

Otherwise, apart from the usual keyboards, mice and compostable controllers, nothing else has caught our attention so far …
