In terms of power, the free Blender software package is in no way inferior to many commercial packages. Here is a video tutorial on rigging a human character.

Blender 2.53 provides a human meta-rig, and this is adjusted using the respective parameters. As an additional bonus, the video shows the recovery of project files after a crash – this happens to the tutorial producer, and the real example shows how this recovery works.
