Whether in the cinema or on television, on large screens or small displays, moving images are everywhere. From today’s perspective, it is hard to imagine that at the beginning of the 20th century the medium of film was still considered a novelty. For a century, Potsdam has held an important place in film history.
With the 2011 theme year “Potsdam 2011 – City of Film”, the state capital Potsdam and its partners Filmpark Babelsberg, the “Konrad Wolf” University of Film and Television and the Potsdam Film Museum celebrate Potsdam as a film and media location. A specially initiated project office under the direction of Prof. Dr Elizabeth Prommer coordinates and organises Potsdam’s film year together with local media professionals, cultural institutions, associations and public institutions. With numerous highlights such as open-air film screenings, exhibitions, film festivals, premiere celebrations, special city tours, conferences and congresses, the Brandenburg state capital celebrates its film tradition over the course of a year.
“Potsdam 2011- City of Film” shows the many facets of the world-famous film city and uncovers treasures of film history. Potsdam is a place that attracted not only Heinz Rühmann, Marlene Dietrich, Fritz Lang, Konrad Wolf, Manfred Krug, Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino…
