The Shadow of the Doom3 Engine

Is there a patent on shadows? Apparently so, because John Carmack, the developer of the Doom3 engine, faces the problem of a shadowy patent dispute before the source code is released.

Before releasing the Doom3 source code, the lead programmer has to revise his representation of shadows in the engine once again. This is because the company Creative found a very similar solution for displaying shadows in parallel with Carmack, but was faster at the patent office than he was.

On the advice of his lawyers, the Doom3 developer is now working on the engine’s source code again. Nevertheless, nothing is intended to change about the release of the source code for everyone at the end of 2011.
