The Emmy Award is considered the world’s most important television prize and was accepted on the stage of the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles by the German Pxomondo employees Rainer Gombos (Senior VFX Supervisor), Juri Stanossek (VFX Supervisor), Jan Fiedler (VFX Producer), Sven Martin (VFX Supervisor Dragons), Chris Stenner (Division Animation Supervisor), and Thilo Ewers (Environment Supervisor).
The team received the award for the effects in the episode “Valar Morghulis” from the second season of the HBO series. Pixomondo was the primary supplier of the effects; a total of 528 shots were worked on for the ten one-hour episodes. Worldwide, 323 Pixomondo employees at nine of its 13 locations were involved in producing the visual effects for the second season of “Game of Thrones.” Juri Stanossek from the Pixomondo studio in Stuttgart managed the project for all production areas and locations. Through Thilo Ewers’ set extensions at the Stuttgart location, the fictional continent received its appearance. The fire-breathing dragons from "Game of Thrones" were created by the team around Sven Martin and Chris Stenner at the Frankfurt studio.
Last year there were only two Emmys for the the HBO series "Game of Thrones"; this year it cleaned up in a total of six categories. In addition to the Emmy for best visual effects, HBO received awards for best sound editing, sound mixing, art direction, make-up, and best costumes. Since the official Emmy ceremony, at which the main categories will be awarded, still takes place on September 23, a few more gold statuettes may be added for "Game of Thrones."
