The eyelO codec promises more efficient compression of 4K data streams so they can be transmitted to living rooms more quickly. According to Sony, the circular Sony FMP-X1 player can store and play 4K videos and uses eyelO compression technology to do so.
The new Sony player, which is not yet ready to ship, is intended to serve as a content supplier and playback device for the new 4K televisions. Online video portals such as the American company Netflix also intend to use eyelO compression.
At the launch of the new player, films including "The Bridge on the River Kwai", "Karate Kid", "Taxi Driver" and "The Amazing Spiederman" are intended to be available in 4K.
