A story of love and fury convinced the Annecy jury this year. The animated film "Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury" from Buriti Films received the grand prize at the Annecy Festival last Saturday. The film’s look is somewhat reminiscent of the Captain Future era, but the jury seems to have recognised the potential of the film about an immortal hero who has loved his sweetheart Janaína for 600 years.

The scope of the plot is also comprehensive: filmmaker Luiz Bolognesi structured the story across four phases of Brazilian history. It spans colonisation, slavery, the miltary regime and the future in 2096, when a war over water has erupted.
