3D-Coat from Pilgway is an alternative to Autodesk Mudbox or Pixologic ZBrush that, at 379 dollars, is priced significantly below the two tools. According to Pilgway, 3D-Coat can be used to sculpt elaborate organic models such as characters, landscapes or jewelry. In addition, retopologies of high-resolution models can be made for use in computer games and simulations, and 3D models can be textured with painting tools.
The new autorepology algorithm, especially the one for hard surfaces, promises to be a useful feature expansion for 3D-Coat in the future. It appears that edges can be placed exactly on the sculpting model edges with it, and remodeling during production would therefore no longer be necessary. According to Andrew Shapgin’s Twitter account, the feature is expected to be available in the very next 3D-Coat update.
