The low-level Mantle API can access GPU functions and enables development studios to program close to the system. Games such as Battlefield 4 are intended to benefit from Mantle because it is optimized much more closely for the hardware. With the interface, AMD is pursuing a Unified Gaming Strategy—console, cloud, content and client—in other words: Mantle is intended to make developing games for different platforms easier while also providing a leap forward in performance. This means Mantle goes beyond DirectX. More information in the AMD Newsroom.
