For the launch of the newly released Skoda Superb, no “simple” online configurator was to be created. The desired configurator was intended to stand out from those of other manufacturers. The team from Munich studio Aixsponza developed the concept of combining the online configurator with a classic commercial. The potential buyer was thus intended to be able to see exactly their configured car in action – during the one-minute commercial following the configurator.

Due to the large number of possible combinations with different colours, rims and the two car types, estate and saloon, a relative large number of variants of the commercial were required to cover all possibilities. In addition, the chosen environment and lighting had to work equally well with all conceivable paint and rim variants. This had to be considered particularly at the extremes – white and black paint. In addition, the team was tasked with visualising interior variants that also had to look good in the set environment.

A particular challenge was integrating the full-CG cars into the filmed backgrounds. In addition to lighting the cars, the backgrounds had to be cleaned of various small details for an advertising-effective appearance, which increased the compositing effort once again. For all renderings, the team relied on the combination of Cinema 4D and V-Ray. Compositing was done in After Effects. Eight employees worked on the implementation for approximately two months. The entry was nominated for an animago AWARD in the "Best Interactive Production" category.
