The theme “Blending Realities” offers a field of tension from VFX to augmented reality. VFX and augmented reality are a focus of FMX because they are already exploring the possibilities of transcending and merging reality. Their potential is the focus of numerous presentations, workshops and collaborative formats. In addition, this year’s FMX places an emphasis on topics such as Realtime Storytelling, Disruptive Technologies, Sound Design, Hack Art, Directing for VR, Business Leaders, Investors Meet Technology Start-ups, Stop-Motion, Layout and Set, Tools of Tomorrow, and Cameras & Pipelines.

Further Events

Alongside these programme highlights, FMX will also feature all-time favourites, including the event series “Visual Communication”, “Concept Art”, de, “Virtual Humans Forum”, “VFX for TV” and “VFX for Commercials”. The “Lighting & Rendering Track” is also back; this year cinematographers will play an important role, allowing both VFX experts and live-action professionals to have their say.

Filmakademie Projects

Another part of the programme comes from the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, which organises FMX each year: to mark its 25th anniversary, it will present itself and its projects to a broad audience.

International Speakers

Although FMX will not open the doors at Haus der Wirtschaft until the end of April, several renowned speakers have already confirmed. Director Mark Osborne and Stop-Motion Creative Director James Caliri will discuss the blend of 3D computer animation and stop motion they achieved in the feature film “The Little Prince”. Chris Robinson (Festival Director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival) will describe his artistic career as part of the “Animation Wild & Strange” conference format. The “Game Cinematics” programme will also include a presentation on “Halo 5” from Axis Animation: Creative Director Stuart Aiken provides insight into the game’s epic opening sequence and explains the collaboration between Axis, 343 Industries and Microsoft Games. This year’s Tech Talks, curated by Tomasz Bednarz, address “Hack Art”, while Jon Peddie’s “Graphics à la Cloud” track promises news from the cloud.
