The BBC R&D video-coding research team examined the savings, both for the viewer and in data rate, with H.265/HEVC compared with H.264/AVC, and in some scenarios it was almost 50 percent less data at comparable quality.
Now, to our knowledge, the patents and negotiations for H.265 (particularly the applicable licence fees) are far from settled, but data rates like these should motivate people to raise the subject with those involved at every available opportunity.
