Our interview partner was Simon Haegler, software developer at Esri R&D Zurich and an expert in procedural modelling. For him, the most exciting new feature in CityEngine 2017 is the so-called Local Edits. They allow the user to work interactively on procedural objects in the viewport. This solves the problem that procedural models could not previously be edited.

The first thing that stands out, however, is the new interface. It has been thoroughly cleaned up and simplified. The software also introduces “scenarios”. They allow the artist to create different versions of a scene and display, compare and edit them side by side. An exciting feature for anyone who likes to have a large selection.
