Leaving the Nest
Some may know the popular GeoGlyph plug-in from World Machine. Now QuadSpinner is venturing one step further with Gaea 2480 and has developed its own standalone terrain-generation tool.
Gaea 2480 Is Almost Grown Up
With its additional scale controls for erosion and further control options for dirt, rain and snow distribution, the standalone build of Gaea 2480 looks quite promising.
Of course, it is currently still in Early Access (so we may turn a blind eye to small errors once again), but the major release is still scheduled to take place this quarter.
Why Gaea?
Originally known as The TOR Platform, Gaea advertises a mixture of procedurally generated terrain and artist-friendly editing tools at the same time. As in World Machine, terrain forms can be edited with layers (similar to those in Photoshop) or sculpted directly.
Availability and Price
Gaea 2480 is available in Early Access only for Windows 7+. There is currently no Mac or Linux version.
The tool’s price is based on the maximum export resolution. A version capped at 4K is available from $99. The higher versions, Professional ($199) and Enterprise ($299), on the other hand, offer no limitations here and at the same time also include additional feature.
Incidentally, all three versions are additionally reduced during the Early Access phase. This offer expires as soon as the official release takes place.
