The Possibilities of DisplayPort 2.0

A new update to the DisplayPort standard has arrived: DisplayPort 2.0 triples the data rate!

A new DisplayPort generation was introduced last week by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). With DisplayPort 2.0, a significantly higher data rate can be achieved, for better resolution and more. According to statements from VESA, the first products with corresponding support are expected to come onto the market toward the end of 2020.

The DisplayPort 2.0 Specs

DP 2.0 is the biggest update since March 2016 and, with 77.37 Gbit/s, offers up to a threefold increase in data rate compared with the previous 1.4a version of the standard (25.92 Gbit/s). DisplayPort 2.0 therefore also has more than its HDMI 2.1 competitor (48 Gbit/s).

This makes it possible, among other things, to implement resolutions up to 16K, higher refresh rates, HDR-10 support at higher resolutions, more configurations, as well as improved AR / VR experiences. The new version of the standard will be based on Thunderbolt 3, as is the upcoming USB 4.0. The new advantages can be used through the native DP connector or through the USB Type-C connector. DP 2.0 is, however, also backward-compatible with earlier versions and contains all important functions of DP 1.4a, including support for visually lossless Display Stream Compression (DSC) with Forward Error Correction (FEC), HDR metadata transport and other advanced functions.

DP 2.0 Configuration Examples

In addition to the mentioned 8K resolution at 60 Hz with HDR support, DP 2.0 allows a variety of other configurations through the native DP connector or through USB-C as “DisplayPort Alt Mode.” The following examples are from vesa.org:

Single Display

  • 16K display (15360 × 8460) at 60 Hz and 30 bpp 4: 4: 4 HDR (with DSC)
  • 10K display (10240 × 4320) at 60 Hz and 24 bpp 4: 4: 4 (no compression)

Dual Display 

  • Two 8K displays (7680 × 4320) at 120 Hz and 30 bpp 4: 4: 4 HDR (with DSC)
  • Two 4K displays (3840 × 2160) at 144 Hz and 24 bpp 4: 4: 4 (no compression)

Triple Display

  • Three 10K (10240 × 4320) displays at 60 Hz and 30 bpp 4: 4: 4 HDR (with DSC)
  • Three 4K displays (3840 × 2160) at 90 Hz and 30 bpp 4: 4: 4 HDR (no compression)
