The Khronos Group recently released the OpenXR 1.0 specification. OpenXR is a unified, royalty-free open standard for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) development. Consisting of an API and device plug-in interface, the standard is intended to enable unified, powerful access across different platforms and devices.

In addition, according to the Khronos Group, future versions will be backward compatible. OpenXR implementations from Microsoft (OpenXR runtime for Windows Mixed Reality Haedets) and Collabora (open-source platform for OpenHMD-compaitble Haedset under Linux) have already been released. More are expected to follow—including the Oculus implementation for Rift and Oculus Quest, for Unreal Engine and many more. You can find the new specification on the Khronos website and via GitHub.
