- Introducing: The killer features – storyboard editor, time-lapse function, frame cloning and more…
- Newly brushed: Upload custom brushes with the MyPaint Brush Engine.
- The Animated Artist: Clone keyframes and reuse them – but above all: “Tweening” makes animators’ everyday work easier.
- Support for the AVIF image file format.
- Recorder Docker and Storyboard Docker: Use these two features to upload time-lapse recordings of your current work in progress to social media platforms.
- Looking back at June 24, 2020: What has happened since Krita 4.3 came out?
In a nutshell: The Krita Foundation releases version 5.0 of its open-source painting software Krita. The core features include a storyboard editor, a time-lapse function for video recording, as well as support for “tweening” (see below) and frame cloning.

New brush engine: In the new version, Krita Foundation includes the latest version of the MyPaint Brush Engine, which lets you upload custom brushes. Krita 5.0 is compatible with MyPaint 1.2 and higher. And while we are on the subject of brush engines: The so-called Color Smudge Brush Engine, which is responsible for smudging different colours together, has been improved in terms of performance. Moving on: Anyone who takes a look at the Brush Textures design item will notice that this same item has been enriched with several modes. Working with gradients has also been improved, which includes support for Blue Noise Dithering in 8-bit gradients, while 16- and 32-bit gradients are also supported.
Animating? Relaxed, like a walk in the park! In response to user requests, the ability to clone and reuse keyframes has been built in. As mentioned at the start, the process known as “tweening” is now also available to you, in which individual frames are generated between two selected images, making an animator’s everyday work considerably easier. In addition, the respective animation layer can now also be adjusted, regardless of whether you want to change the position, rotation, size or thrust of a movement.
Support for the AVIF format: Anyone who works with the AVIF image file format can do a somersault (for joy), because Krita 5.0 supports the format, which is used for both still and moving images. Fans of AVIF swear by the image file format because it is said to involve fewer unwanted artefacts, while on the other hand it should also ensure better compression than is the case with JPEG. But test it yourselves…
Artist goes Social Media: Recorder Docker and Storyboard Docker are the names of the two features with which artists create time-lapse recordings of their current work in progress, render them in PDF or SVG format, and play them out on a social media platform of their choice.
Fast, faster – Krita 5.0: the fastest of all? All those for whom starting up the software or opening brush presets cannot be quick enough will rejoice, because the software’s memory usage has been balanced in favour of a leaner use of 200 megabytes of RAM.
Clicking on: You can find all the new features of Krita 5.0 in the associated release notes. With the short video below, the Krita Foundation pats itself on the (virtual) back on the occasion of the release. Anyone who would like to get to know the new features quickly is advised to click the four further videos below, because some of the new features are explained to you compactly there. Have fun clicking and discovering!

Preview: By the way: For one of our next issues, we are preparing an extensive practical test of Krita 5. So it remains to be seen whether version 5.0 will be able to hold its own under our tester’s sharply pointed brush…
