In brief: Kinetix 1.4 updated the browser-based motion-capture tool for transferring recorded movement to 3D characters used in Blender, Maya, Unity or Unreal Engine. The free service was described as an advanced beta at publication.
New in version 1.4: The release added hand-motion capture, XR export and more than 40 characters and animations from Adobe’s Mixamo library. Earlier guidance recommended recording the performer from head to toe; version 1.4 was designed to process footage in which only part of the performer remained visible.
Input and output: Users could upload MP4, MOV or AVI files, or supply a YouTube URL. Kinetix transferred the performer’s movement to a selected realistic or stylised character, with optional backgrounds, props and furniture. Finished work could be exported as WebM, FBX or glTF.
Limitation: Character animation could not be edited extensively in the service. Motion could chiefly be shortened or lengthened.
Alternative and access: Digital Production had previously covered the browser-based Plask tool. Further Kinetix information was available from the developer website. Test capture accuracy, retargeting and export compatibility before production use.
