For those who don’t know the tool: Nitro Retopo is a Blender add-on by 3D character artist Adrien Rouquié, also known as Adriflex. It is built for segmenting, repairing and retopologising dense geometry from sculpts, 3D scans and AI-generated models. Rather than asking an automatic remesher to make all the decisions, it lets the artist draw the regions and steer how the replacement topology flows.
Draw first, negotiate with polygons later
Nitro Retopo starts with the awkward geometry rather than immediately replacing it. A preparation command uses Blender’s Decimate to reduce the source mesh, with the reduction ratio set automatically for the workflow. From there, artists draw boundaries directly on the surface. Curves, straight lines and freehand strokes are available, along with circles and ellipses; a boundary can also follow existing mesh edges. Erasing part of a boundary lets the patch layout be revised without starting the whole argument again.
Those boundaries divide the source into patches. That makes the tool useful for fused geometry where the first problem is not merely polygon count, but deciding which bit is supposed to be a separate bit. Individual regions can be isolated for further work, while holes can be filled and open boundaries bridged. The repair stage is interactive, so the surface can be adjusted before the result is applied.
Topology with adult supervision
For the actual retopology, the artist marks corners on a patch to guide the generated topology. Nitro Retopo can then cycle through alternative patch patterns, change their orientation and add insets. The important distinction is control: this is not a one-button promise that a dense triangle soup will emerge wearing immaculate production quads. The artist defines the regions and topology direction, then refines the result.
The final generation step creates a separate mesh. Drawn boundaries become seams, and the add-on can produce an automatic UV unwrap. That puts segmentation, surface repair, topology construction and an initial UV result into one Blender workflow instead of turning each stage into a small departmental transfer.
Rouquié says the tools are intended to cope with meshes containing millions of triangles. In his knight demonstration, an AI-generated model begins at roughly 1.5 million triangles, is reduced to a working mesh of about 91,000 triangles and ends at roughly 35,000 triangles after retopology. Those numbers describe that particular model and workflow, not a universal reduction ratio. Geometry, unlike marketing copy, remains stubbornly model-dependent.

Another route through retopology
Nitro Retopo arrives in a fairly busy corner of Blender. RetopoFlow 4 takes a sketch-based approach inside Edit Mode, while the recently covered Alpaca3D moves retopology, UV work and baking into a standalone application. Nitro Retopo’s particular angle is the combination of surface segmentation and repair with artist-directed patch topology, which is especially relevant when the source has fused parts that need separating before clean topology becomes useful.
The developer also states that substantial AI coding assistance was used to build the add-on, while the workflow itself came from his work as a character artist and was iterated on his own projects. That is implementation history rather than an AI retopology feature: the topology decisions exposed by Nitro Retopo remain artist-guided.
Production caveat
The generated topology still needs to be judged against its destination. A mesh intended for deformation, rigging or close-up character work has different edge-flow requirements from a static scanned prop, and the developer explicitly notes that editing and cleanup depend on the model and intended use. In other words, Nitro Retopo supplies more useful levers; it has not yet abolished topology judgement, which is inconsiderate but technically sensible.
