Based on MPEG software from nanocosmos and a Fujitsu Siemens CELSIUS P4 workstation, DVC developed a real-time encoding solution that produced MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 elementary, program and transport streams.
Support for D10
DVC highlighted compatibility with the IMX format from Sony, standardized as SMPTE D10. The system supported MPEG profiles including MP@ML and 422P@ML at data rates of up to 50 Mbit/s.
MPEGEngine included a digital SDI input and stored MPEG files on an internal disk array. An Ethernet network interface allowed the files to be transferred to other systems, including IMX servers.
Editing, decoding and playout
DVC offered optional basic editing software so that MPEG files could be edited directly on MPEGEngine.
An optional decoder card supported decoding during encoding as well as playout. It handled the same MPEG formats and provided SDI, composite video and AES/EBU audio outputs.
QuickClip playout software could be used to create playlists. An RS-422 connection allowed the playout board to be controlled like a videotape recorder.
DVC and Fujitsu Siemens presented MPEGEngine with D10 for the first time at IBC 2001. DVC exhibited in Hall 7, Stand 419, while Fujitsu Siemens was in Hall 5, Stand 231.
