OPTOPlay was introduced as a compact USB-to-stereo audio converter from Audiotrak. It provided a 3.5 mm analogue stereo output and an optical S/PDIF TOSLink output, supported 44.1 and 48 kHz sample rates, and processed signals at either 16- or 24-bit resolution.
The device was designed for straightforward operation: users connected its attached USB cable to a laptop or desktop computer and then connected a MiniDisc recorder to the optical output. An optical mini-adaptor was supplied for the connections used on some MiniDisc players.
Alternatively, an analogue mixer, active loudspeakers or headphones could be connected to the analogue output. Audiotrak promoted the interface as a way to obtain clean sound from a notebook or desktop computer without an internal sound card.
OPTOPlay supported Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP as well as Mac OS X. The recommended retail price at the time was €99 including VAT. The product belongs to the wider archive of audio interfaces and computer workstation hardware.
