Animo 4.1, the complete hand-drawn animation production system, became available for Windows 2000, Windows NT and Mac OS X. Cambridge Animation Systems described it as the only package at the time capable of integrating 2D and 3D animation without a break in the workflow.
The system allowed artists to combine established traditional techniques with modern computer tools. Its intended benefits included faster work, more expressive images, smoother motion and advanced visual effects. Version 4.1 also supported Macromedia Flash output.
Modular configuration
Animo 4.1 was sold either as a configured package or as individual modules. Every package included Scan, InkPaint, Director, Render, VectorEditor and ImageProcessor.
Optional modules included SFX, ColorCorrection, Rigging, Scene III, PencilTester and SoundBreakdown. PencilTester and SoundBreakdown could also run independently.
Floating licensing
A floating licence allowed the software to run on any workstation connected to the network, so a studio could assign functions where they were currently needed.
Production use
Customers included Warner Bros., DreamWorks SKG, Nelvana, Colorland and Loonland. The developer reported more than 3,000 installations worldwide and positioned Animo as an industry standard for combined 2D and 3D production. German product support was supplied by DBS GmbH.
