Pixar released RenderMan Artist Tools 5.0 for Alias/Wavefront Maya on Intel, Linux and IRIX systems. The update introduced new production tools and expanded existing functions.

The principal addition was Irma, a re-rendering tool that reused calculations already held in memory. This was designed to reduce render times while artists refined lighting and shaders. Multi-processor operation could further accelerate large scenes.

MTOR 5.0 directly supported features introduced with PRMan Toolkit 10. These included face-varying data, allowing artists to use 3D paint applications to texture subdivision surfaces.

Current information is available from Pixar’s RenderMan. German product information was supplied at the time by DBS GmbH. The tools connected RenderMan with Maya and VFX workflows.
