Media 100 began shipping the 844/Xi, a lower-cost member of its 844/X editing family. The system targeted users moving beyond dual-stream editing and combined editing with integrated real-time compositing and 10-bit effects.

The GenesisEngine architecture processed two video streams and two full-motion alpha streams in real time. Its recursive layering system could build compositions with an unlimited number of layers while processing four layers at once without host-based rendering.

The Interoperability Release added timeline export to Adobe After Effects and support for imported Photoshop layers. Planned interchange options included OMF compatibility with Avid Symphony, Media Composer, Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro and Media 100 i, plus EDL export.

The additional interoperability features were expected in February 2003. A complete 844/Xi system was listed at €51,595 excluding VAT through authorised dealers.
